| The
Earagail Arts festival 10th - 23rd July 2006 |
| |
|
Every
July, the Earagail Arts Festival celebrates and creates a high profile
platform for the contemporary and the traditional arts in Donegal.
|
| |
|
It
reflects the unique character and demographic of the region by presenting
an exciting, high quality, bi-lingual programme of arts activities
across a wide geographical area of Donegal – from the Inishowen
Penninsula, southward to Letterkenny and the Border region of East
Donegal, and westward across Sliabh an Earagail to the Gaeltacht area
of Gaoth Dobhair, Cloch Cheann Fhaola and Na Rosainn.
Now approaching its eighteenth year, the Festival is firmly established
as the highlight of the summer calendar. The programme offers a quality
mix of local, national and international artists, within a programme
that includes theatre, a wide and varied music programme, comedy,
outdoor spectacles and family events, children’s programme,
literature and visual arts.

| Letterkenny
Smithwicks Comedy festival |
|
| 27th
- 29th July 2006 |
|
| |
|
|
 |
With
18 shows across 3 days and over 48 comedians the festival this year
will have a strong international flavour |
|
| |
|
|
While
the rest of Ireland has only relatively recently caught the comedy
bug, stand-up has been an epidemic in Donegal as long back as the
16th century when, rumour has it, Archie Armstrong the court jester
for King Charles 1st was given 1000 acres in the North West of Ireland
for being too funny even for the bonnie prince Charlie. So what better
town in Dun Na nGall to have a North West comedy festival than Letterkenny.
With 18 shows across 3 days and over 48 comedians the festival this
year will have a strong international flavour. Each venue will give
the audience the chance to experience two international acts and two
Irish acts.

| The
All Ireland Fleadh 25th - 27th August |
|
| |
|
|
 |
The
2006 all-Ireland Fleadh will be held in Letterkenny, County Donegal
- This is the second year running for the town to host the All Ireland
Fleadh. |
|
| |
|
|
The
last All Ireland to be held in Ulster prior to 2005 was also in Donegal,
in Buncrana in 1979.
With a tradition that includes Johnny Doherty, Tommy Peoples and the
world renowned Altan, Donegal has a reputation for producing musicians,
particularly fiddle players, who rank among the greats.
The Fleadh is now an 8 day event, incorporating the Scoil Éigse
(the Comhaltas Summer school) running for the full week before the
event and the Seachtain na hÉigse 2006 with 2 or 3 events and
concerts every night of the Fleadh week. This coupled with Donegal's
reputation for beautiful scenery and great hospitality, will ensure
that the 2006 Fleadh is one not to be missed.
More information can be found at the official Fleadh website.
